Epic’s 41.20 Fortnite ecosystem update landed on July 16 with new Sidekick animation tools, a publishing date for creature-themed islands, and a separate July 30 date for LLM conversations leaving Experimental.
What changed in 41.20
- Sidekicks now have initial Control Rig support in UEFN, with Dog Large, Dog Small, and Cat Small archetypes.
- Epic says creature-based games can be published starting July 23 and can use a new Creatures tag.
- LLM-powered NPC and character conversations are scheduled to become publishable on July 30.
- The update also adds in-world UMG widgets and new content including the Bank Shot Pistol, Smoke Grenade, Friend Zone item, and Sinister Strip prefabs/galleries.
Epic says creature-based games will get a dedicated Discover collection and can include in-island transactions, while creators must follow Fortnite Developer Rules and payout terms. The company also says the first wave of 36 Fortnite characters now has consistent voices and personas for LLM conversations when used as NPCs.
Why creators should care
The timing matters because July 23 opens a new publishing lane for creature-centric islands, while July 30 unlocks a separate AI-dialogue path. That gives UEFN teams two near-term release targets instead of one, with different content and compliance requirements.
