Epic says Fortnite Sidekicks are now available as scriptable NPCs in Unreal Editor for Fortnite, letting creators build creature-focused experiences and script behavior with Verse. Epic says developers can start building immediately, but publishing is scheduled to open on July 23, 2026.
What Epic says creators can build
- Epic describes use cases including monster battlers, cozy farming games, creature-collection RPGs, and companion adventures.
- Creators can customize how Sidekicks look, animate them, and bring a player's own Sidekick into an island.
- Epic says Sidekick islands will be eligible for a new creature-based Collection page and additional Discover featuring opportunities.
The update also adds a Sidekick-specific reaction system for following, fetching, fleeing, attacking, and reacting to in-game events. Epic notes that licensed Sidekicks cannot be used as NPCs, and that not all weapons can damage Sidekicks. Epic’s support article repeats the July 23 publishing date.
For IslandAtlas readers, the key takeaway is that Sidekicks are moving from player cosmetics into creator gameplay systems. That could broaden the range of islands built around companions, collection, and pet-style progression, once publishing opens.
