Kingdom Hearts Arrives in Fortnite on September 17

Epic Games has teased a Kingdom Hearts crossover for Fortnite, and the timing is unusually tight: the collaboration is set to begin Thursday, September 17, at approximately 7:00 AM Eastern, arriving with the v42.20 update rather than sitting behind a separate event.

The teaser Epic posted is short — a look at Sora and a handful of lines lifted from the series — but it is an official reveal rather than a datamine, which puts it in a different category from most of the crossover chatter this season.

What Epic actually showed

• Sora, in his Kingdom Hearts 2 outfit, shown on screen in the teaser.
• The Kingdom Key confirmed as a Mythic weapon — with its usual Mickey Mouse keychain swapped for a Supply Llama charm.
• Quotes from the series that point to Riku, Kairi and Roxas joining Sora, though Epic has not named them outright.
• A start time of roughly 7:00 AM ET on September 17, lining up with the v42.20 patch.

The keychain swap is the detail worth noting. Sora's Keyblade carries a Mickey Mouse token in every mainline Kingdom Hearts game, and replacing it with a Llama is the kind of change that usually signals a licensing boundary rather than an art decision — Disney characters and Square Enix characters are separate deals.

What Epic did not say

A lot, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than filling in. Epic has not announced how any of the skins are obtained, whether they are Item Shop purchases or tied to a pass, what anything costs, or whether the collaboration brings a mode, a map change or quests alongside the cosmetics.

Nor has Epic confirmed the three additional characters. Riku, Kairi and Roxas are widely expected because of the lines used in the teaser, but expectation drawn from a quote is not an announcement, and the roster could be smaller or staggered.

Why the v42.20 timing matters for creators

Epic has been shipping Fortnite Ecosystem release notes alongside each numbered update — 42.00 on August 20 and 42.10 on September 3, a roughly two-week cadence. A collaboration landing on the patch rather than between patches means the UEFN-facing notes and the crossover arrive on the same day.

That matters for anyone planning island updates around it. Device changes, Verse API changes and deprecations all ship in those notes, and a patch day that also carries a major crossover tends to be a heavy traffic day for creator islands — a bad combination if you were planning to push an untested build the same morning.

Where this sits in the season

Chapter 7 Season 4, Override, runs through Halloween weekend 2026, so a mid-September crossover lands with roughly six weeks of season left. That is enough runway for the collaboration to be more than a one-week Item Shop rotation, but Epic has committed to nothing on duration.

Treat everything beyond the September 17 date, Sora, and the Kingdom Key Mythic as unconfirmed until the update actually goes live.
