The player-facing half of Fortnite v42.10 landed on September 3 — Prop Hunt, Big Heads, three weapons behind Loot Hacks. The creator-facing half shipped the same day and reads very differently: a complete horror environment kit, 166 new audio control buses, and a Verse API that lets an island ask whether the people in the match arrived together.
Harrowville is a whole horror kit, not a demo map
The headline item in the 42.10 ecosystem release notes is Harrowville, an environment template built around horror assets and lighting techniques. It arrives with its own set galleries rather than as a single prefab, which is the part that matters — galleries are what let a creator build an original layout in the style instead of shipping a recognisable copy of Epic's example.
- Harrowville Set galleries — floors, stairs, roofs, walls, props, cliffs and a house.
- Cluster Coast Set — floors, walls, roofs, props, plus a Duck Yacht and Salty Duck.
- 166 new audio control buses, music, sound effects and vocals aimed at horror maps.
- New Rare, Epic and Legendary variants of the Striker Burst AR.
One hundred and sixty-six audio buses is an unusual number to ship in a point release. Horror is the one genre where audio does most of the work, and until now the practical ceiling for an island's soundscape was how much a creator was willing to import and mix by hand. This is Epic removing the excuse.
Social Synergy lets Verse see the party
The Verse addition worth reading twice is the Social Synergy API, which exposes party membership through `GetLocalParty()`. Epic's stated uses are score bonuses, exclusive access and difficulty scaling — in other words, an island can now behave differently for a group of four friends than for four strangers who happened to fill the same lobby.
That has been a blind spot for co-op islands since UEFN launched. A horror map tuned for a coordinated squad is a different design from one tuned for randoms, and creators have had to pick one and lose the other audience. Difficulty scaling by party size is the obvious first use; the more interesting one is retention, because a mode that rewards arriving together gives players a reason to bring someone.
Mobile testing stops being guesswork
Two smaller items close a real gap. Mobile Preview now lets you pick a specific popular iOS or Android device and get its accurate safe zones, and the UE Remote App was updated for testing gesture recognition on physical hardware. Touch input left Experimental back in 42.00, so the tooling is catching up with a feature creators were already shipping into live games.
The release also carries a fix list that will matter more to published islands than any of the new toys: jetpack hover-in-place is restored, VFX Powerup glow and outline effects work again, physics sliding is consistent across island types, player spawning is corrected on physics-enabled islands, and skeletal animations no longer freeze on clients. Also worth noting for anyone with a large project — non-private assets now leave redirectors behind when moved or renamed, so a reorganisation stops silently breaking references.
Why a horror kit lands in early September
The timing is not subtle: a horror template published in the first week of September gives creators about seven weeks to build before Halloween traffic arrives, and Epic has shipped seasonal tooling on that runway before. The demand is already visible in the charts — the island sitting at number one on our board today is Hostel : Bandlands (`9884-6777-5514`), a first-person co-op action map, and horror-adjacent co-op has been the most durable genre near the top all season. Everyone building in that lane now has the same assets, which means the differentiator moves to layout, pacing and sound design, not the art pack.
