An empty neon racetrack at dusk with no cars on it

Yesterday we covered the three creator-facing headliners in Epic's 42.20 ecosystem release notes — the Channel API, unarmed melee and the raised movement ceilings. The same document carries a fourth item that did not fit that story and matters more to anyone who built on a first-party template: Rocket Racing islands stop being playable on October 1.

Epic's wording is not hedged. "On October 1, Rocket Racing will leave Fortnite, and all UEFN islands built with Rocket Racing templates will be unpublished and no longer playable." Publishing updates to those islands is disabled as well, so there is no patching your way around the date.

The shutdown is old news. The deadline is not

Rocket Racing's retirement was announced back on 24 March 2026, bundled with Ballistic and Festival's Battle Stage. What every outlet reported then was a month — "October 2026" — with no day attached. What changed this week is that the day is now real: a dataminer surfaced in-game messaging naming October 1 on September 17, and Epic's own ecosystem notes spell out the consequence for creators in plain language for the first time.

So the useful number is not six months. It is thirteen days from this article.

What survives and what does not

The distinction Epic draws is between the *template* and the *tools*. The template goes. The devices that made racing work have been migrated so racing islands can still be built without it:

  • Track Spline Tool
  • Boost Pads
  • Volume Hazards
  • Spawner devices

That migration is the escape hatch, and it is not new either — the March announcement already said existing Rocket Racing content could be transferred to standalone islands before the shutdown, and that the car physics, hazards and track-building tools would land in the base game in April for creators. Six months of runway have passed quietly. If your island is still on the template on October 1, the runway is what ran out, not the warning.

The part worth sitting with

Set the racing aside for a second. A platform decision is about to unpublish finished, playable, discoverable islands that creators built and shipped — not because those islands broke a rule, and not because they stopped working, but because the mode underneath them is being retired. Player cosmetics are handled more gently than that: Vehicle Locker items are unaffected, and players keep the cars they customised for use elsewhere in Fortnite.

That asymmetry is the real lesson for anyone choosing what to build on next. A first-party template is the fastest way to a working island and the only one whose lifetime is somebody else's call. Building on migrated devices is slower and it is yours.

If you have an island on the template

  • Check now whether your island was created from a Rocket Racing template — that is the trigger, not whether it contains a racetrack.
  • Rebuild on the migrated devices rather than waiting for a reprieve. Publishing updates to template islands is already off, so the rebuild is a new island, not an edit.
  • Pull anything you want to keep — layouts, Verse, assets — before October 1 rather than after. Epic has not said what access to an unpublished template island looks like afterwards, and neither will we guess.

We will keep tracking Discover for what the October 1 removals do to the racing category's island counts. That is the kind of before-and-after our own data is good for, and it should be visible within a day of the cutoff.
