Epic used its June 17 State of Unreal 2026 update to say Unreal Engine 6 is in development and that the engine will combine UE5-era AAA tools with a next-generation pipeline being tested in Fortnite through UEFN. Epic says the first tools for these new capabilities are targeted for early next year. Read the announcement and the related UE6 roadmap post.

The company also said it has reduced UEFN iteration times by an average of 40% and that Scene Graph is giving developers more control through Verse-scriptable components for animation, itemization, and gameplay abilities. Epic framed UEFN as a live environment for validating the next version of its engine architecture. Source.

Why it matters for creators

  • Epic says UE6 is being designed to support traditional games, Fortnite projects, and creator ecosystems.
  • Verse is central to Epic’s stated long-term programming model.
  • UEFN remains the proving ground for engine systems before they reach UE6.

For IslandAtlas readers, the practical takeaway is that Epic is signaling a longer runway for UEFN as a creator platform, not a short-term feature experiment. That makes performance, workflow, and portability part of the same story as the editor itself. UE6 roadmap
