Epic Games has announced the 2026 Epic AI MegaJam, a four-day game jam running November 12 to 15 in which teams build a playable game in Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) with the help of AI tools. The announcement went out on October 22, and by the next day Epic had already changed one of its rules: the FAQ originally said AI use was mandatory, and Epic now says entrants can use AI as much as they like or not at all, Game World Observer reports.
UEFN is not a side category here. It gets its own Best Overall bracket alongside Unreal Engine, and one prize is reserved for UEFN games only.
How the jam works
- Dates. A kickoff livestream on November 11 at 11 AM PT on Twitch, YouTube and X reveals the theme; building runs November 12–15, with a livestream at the same time each day, according to Inven Global.
- Where. Online through the jam's itch.io page, with a local community, or in person at Digital Jungle in San Francisco on November 14–15. In-person registration opens November 1 at 7 AM PT and spots are limited.
- Teams. Up to five people per team, "plus unlimited agents", in Epic's phrasing. Any AI tool is allowed, from asset generation to coding agents, and Epic recommends setting up agentic coding tools and Model Context Protocol (MCP) in Unreal Engine and UEFN before kickoff.
- Who else is in the room. In-person entrants build alongside teams from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI, among others, per Insider Gaming and Inven Global. Some AI partners are also giving entrants credits for their tools.
The prizes
Each entry competes in one main category: Best Overall (Unreal Engine), Best Overall (UEFN) or Best Student Project, each paying $7,500, $5,000 and $2,500 for first to third. Entries can also add one modifier category: Best Team ($5,000), or $2,500 each for best solo game, best visuals, best mobile game (one Unreal Engine and one UEFN winner), best dev log on AI tool use, and best narrative UEFN game with LLM-powered characters. Game World Observer puts the prize pool at $65,000, which matches the sum of the categories Insider Gaming lists.
On top of the cash, Epic says standout Unreal Engine and UEFN entries can receive development grants of up to $50,000 to keep building after the jam. The Unreal Engine account promoted it with the line "Vibe your way to 50K."
The rule Epic walked back
The launch drew pushback on X and other networks from developers who read it as Epic presenting generative AI as essential to making games quickly. Game World Observer reports that the FAQ stated AI use was mandatory, that Epic called that a mistake, and that the rule was changed the same day. PC Gamer also pointed to the promotional poster, a Matrix-style red-pill image with a six-fingered hand, a classic image-generator error.
What it means for UEFN creators
With the mandatory-AI line gone, a UEFN team can enter with its normal workflow and still compete for the UEFN Best Overall bracket and the grant. The one category that does require AI by definition is the narrative prize, which asks for characters driven by a large language model. Timing matters too: the jam lands in mid-November, when Epic's Treasure Hunters mini-season, teased for November 1, will be running. And a four-day build still has to clear the normal publishing rules, including the portrait thumbnail and logo that UEFN has required since October 22, before anyone outside the jam can play it.
