Epic Games has put a date on Fortnitemares 2026. A teaser posted to X on September 23 reads "Nitemares really do come true, 10.1", confirming Thursday, October 1 for the start of Fortnite's annual Halloween event, alongside this year's slogan: "The Game Is Cursed". The teaser art is a corrupted Override pixel screen run through a CRT filter, which ties the event visually to the Chapter 7 Season 4 build rather than treating it as a standalone Halloween skin drop.
For anyone who just plays Fortnite, that is the whole story: a date and a tagline. For anyone who *builds* in Fortnite, October 1 is doing two jobs at once, and the second one has a deletion attached to it.
October 1 is also the Rocket Racing deadline
Epic's 42.20 ecosystem release notes set October 1 as the day Rocket Racing leaves Fortnite. Every UEFN island built from a Rocket Racing template is unpublished on that date and stops being playable, and publishing updates to those islands is already disabled — we covered the mechanics of that when the notes landed on September 17.
So the same Thursday carries both of these: the single biggest seasonal traffic event on the Fortnite discovery surface, and the removal of an entire island category from it. That collision is not a coincidence Epic engineered — Rocket Racing's shutdown was announced back in March — but it is the practical shape of the week for creators.
What that means if you publish islands
- If you hold a Rocket Racing-template island, October 1 is your last day of playable traffic on it, not a soft deprecation. Pull anything you want to keep — layouts, prop work, Verse you can port — before the date, because an unpublished island is not a browsable one.
- If you publish horror or Halloween islands, the discovery spike arrives the same morning. Fortnitemares weeks historically move a lot of players into the Discover rows, and an island that is already live and already tuned on October 1 is in a different position than one that ships on October 5.
- Do not plan a launch around the leaked crossover list. None of it is confirmed (see below), and a themed island built on a collab that never ships is a wasted cycle.
- The Override-styled teaser art suggests the event reuses the current season's build rather than replacing it, which matters if your island depends on devices or movement behaviour introduced in 42.20.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Confirmed by Epic: the October 1 date, the "The Game Is Cursed" slogan, and the teaser itself. That is the complete list.
Everything else circulating this week is datamined or speculative. Reporting on the teaser notes that dataminers have surfaced files pointing at a Five Nights at Freddy's tie-in, and that Child's Play, The Purge, Beetlejuice and Trick 'r Treat have all been floated. Epic has confirmed none of them. A 99 Nights in the Forest crossover sits in a middle category — it was teased during the Override trailer in August, so it has an on-record appearance, but it has not been confirmed as Fortnitemares content specifically.
Nitemares really do come true, 10.1
We will cover the event proper when Epic publishes the in-game details. The part worth acting on today is the calendar: if you have a Rocket Racing island, the clock on it runs out the same morning everyone else's traffic goes up.
