The first named crossover for Chapter 7 Season 4: Override did not come from Epic. It came from Sega. On August 10 the official Sonic the Hedgehog account posted a teaser with the line *"This new Fortnite Zone feels oddly familiar…"*, and Epic separately confirmed the collaboration lands with the season on August 20.
That is worth stating precisely, because the gap between what is announced and what is circulating has rarely been this wide. Epic itself has published three things about Override: the name, the August 20 date, and the tagline *"Break the rules. Change the game."* — posted on the @Fortnite account on August 5. Everything else you have seen in a roster graphic this week came from datamined files.
Confirmed vs. datamined
- Confirmed by a rights holder: Sonic the Hedgehog, teased by Sega's own account on August 10.
- Confirmed by Epic: the season name Override, the August 20 start, and the tagline. Chapter 7 Season 3 ends August 19.
- Datamined only: Persona, Tetris, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Kingdom Hearts, Crash Bandicoot and the rest of the 'gaming legends' list. No partner studio has posted about any of them.
- Still unannounced: the Battle Pass roster, map changes, and whether the Override name refers to a full theme or just the season's aesthetic.
Datamined lists are frequently right and occasionally very wrong, and the failure mode matters for anyone planning content around them. A leak that turns out to be a next-season file, a cut plan, or a placeholder does not announce itself as wrong — it just quietly never ships, after you have already built for it.
Why a legends season changes island traffic
A crossover season pulls in players who are searching for a character, not for a mode. That is a different discovery pattern from a mechanics-driven season: the spike is front-loaded to launch week, it concentrates on whatever name is trending that day, and it decays fast once the skin is unlocked.
The practical read for creators is that August 20 is the traffic event, not August 19. Season 3's last day is a wind-down — players finishing a Battle Pass rarely leave the modes they already know. The day the new season lands is when discovery resets and a fresh island has its clearest shot at a first impression.
The trap is building against the leaked roster. A single officially teased partner — Sonic — is a safe thing to design pace and movement around, because speed is the read everyone brings to it. A Persona island built on a datamined filename is a bet on a file, and the payout depends on Epic shipping something it has never mentioned.
There is also the Unstable Story Moment on August 15 sitting between now and the season change, with Mythic Sprites appearing more often through it. That is the last scheduled beat of Chapter 7 Season 3, and the last window where a Season 3-tuned island is playing to a full audience.
