Tokyo Game Show 2026 was built as a record: the first five-day edition in the show's thirty-year history, opening September 17 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. It closed after four. Organiser CESA cancelled Monday, September 21 as Typhoon Dujuan — Typhoon No. 25 in Japan's numbering — approached the Kantō region, citing forecasts of strengthening wind and rain from the afternoon onward and the risk of transport disruption.

Sunday, September 20 went ahead as planned, with a warning that individual facilities or content could change on safety grounds. Monday ticket holders are being refunded, and CESA said it plans to stream some of the stage events that were scheduled for the cancelled day.

Why the fifth day existed at all

The extra day was the anniversary's headline structural change. TGS has historically run four days — two for business, two for the public — and 2026 stretched that to five specifically to mark thirty years. Losing the last one is not a small trim to a long show; it is the removal of the thing that made this edition different.

It is also a familiar hazard. TGS sits in mid-to-late September, which is inside Japan's typhoon season, and a weekend-into-Monday storm track is the worst possible shape for a consumer show whose public days land at the end.

What the four days still delivered

The reveal slate was largely front-loaded into the business days and the first weekend, so the cancellation cost attendance rather than announcements. Among the dated items:

• Persona 4 Revival — February 18, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and cloud, and in Game Pass at launch, with a playable 15-minute demo split into Story and Dungeon halves at the Sega/Atlus booth.
• Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember — March 4, 2027.
• Attack on Titan 3 — December 10, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a marquee stage slot on September 20.
• Once Human: Isles of Abyss — October 22, 2026; Edge of Memories — November 5, 2026; Hope in the City — November 10, 2026.
• Hideo Kojima appeared with updates on OD – KNOCK and PHYSINT, including Bill Skarsgård in the lead PHYSINT role.
• The PC Gaming Show's Tokyo Direct ran on September 20 with a slate of world premieres.

Capcom used its TGS Spotlight for a Mega Man Dual Override trailer showing Proto Man, alongside a developer deep dive, and Koei Tecmo built its stage schedule around Attack on Titan 3 and Wo Long 2.

What it means if you build islands

Nothing Fortnite-specific shipped from Makuhari — Epic does not use TGS as a UEFN venue, and the creator-facing news this month has come through the v42.20 ecosystem notes and the in-island transaction tooling instead. The read-across is about the calendar, not the engine.

• Four of the dated releases above land between October 22 and December 10, stacking directly onto the window where Fortnitemares, the v42.x updates and the holiday player influx already compete for attention.
• February and March 2027 are now visibly occupied by Persona 4 Revival and Wo Long 2 — useful if you are pencilling in when a new island gets its best shot at an uncrowded week.
• A cancelled convention day is a reminder that physical-event marketing has a weather dependency that a livestream does not. Anything you plan around a show date deserves a fallback that does not need the doors to open.

CESA has not said whether a five-day TGS returns in 2027. The thirtieth edition got four days and a storm, which is a thin basis for judging whether the longer format works.
