The rarest item in Fortnite right now is not a weapon. It is the Pirate Shop Access Token, a drop added with the Treasure Hunters event on November 1 that lets the team that finds it take nearly anything from the Item Shop for free. Epic has not said how often it drops, and a week in, that silence is the story. Kotaku reported on November 6 that players are calling for the drop rate to be published, with some tagging the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and others posting about a boycott.
What the token does
- Tokens turn up at random in chests in Battle Royale, and the team that finds one gets access, Aftermath reported.
- Access can be activated twice, once in 2026 and once in 2027. Each activation opens a 14-day window to claim most items sold in the shop.
- It cannot be gifted or transferred, and it does not cover real-money offers or Battle Pass levels.
Epic's own description is short. "This is just like any of the chests in Battle Royale, so every player has an equal opportunity to find Pirate Shop Access," the company wrote on X, adding that "buying an account or using fake tools is a scam." That warning followed account listings on eBay priced at $9,000 to $10,000, which IGN reported and which have since been taken down, according to Aftermath.
Why players want the odds
With no official number, the community has filled the gap. A figure of 1 in 700,000 is circulating, but Epic has not confirmed it, and Forbes debunked a theory that low-level accounts find tokens more often. Kotaku describes players opening thousands of chests and grinding for 30 hours or more, and quotes posts complaining that new players found a token on day one while veterans with thousands of chests opened have nothing.
The demand borrows its logic from gacha games, which in some regions must disclose their drop rates. Kotaku points out where that comparison breaks down: in a gacha game you pay for each attempt, while Fortnite's chests cost nothing to open. Aftermath's view is that the token still recreates the worst part of loot boxes, a random prize that keeps people playing, without the odds disclosure that loot boxes often carry.
It is working, for now
Whatever the complaints, the event has brought players back. Player-count tracker Fortnite.GG recorded an 80% jump on the day Treasure Hunters went live, and numbers have stayed well above where they were before, Aftermath reported. Kotaku frames the token as a way to hold the player base ahead of GTA VI on November 19, and notes that players have about a month before the event ends. Until Epic publishes a rate or says it won't, every claim about how to find a token, compasses and "power hours" included, is a guess.
