Fortnite's next update, v42.10, is scheduled for Thursday, September 3 at 4:00 AM PT / 7:00 AM ET, with maintenance expected to run about two hours. It is the first major content patch for Chapter 7 Season 4 since Fortnite Override went live on August 20.

The headline additions are two new Match Overrides — the season-long modifiers that change how a whole match plays rather than what drops in it — plus more Loot Hacks and three new Sprites, two of which came out of a community design contest.

What is in the patch

• Prop Hunt Match Override — players can turn into environmental objects and move around the map disguised as scenery.
• Big Heads Match Override — the oversized-head modifier that previously appeared as a limited-time April Fools' gag returns as a selectable Override.
• Three new Sprites, including two Design-a-Sprite winners chosen from the Chapter 7 Season 3 community contest.
• New Loot Hacks, with Rocket Ram, Gold Banana and Tracking Visor among those named ahead of the patch.
• Three weapons entering the Loot Hack pool — the Holo Twister Assault Rifle, the Deadeye Assault Rifle and the Wrecker Revolver.

The three weapons are not simply added to ground loot. According to Vice's rundown of the update, they have to be unlocked in the Loot Hack menu with Sprite Dust before they start appearing in matches, which puts them behind the same progression currency the Sprite system already uses.

Prop Hunt is the interesting one

Prop Hunt has existed in Fortnite for years as a Creative and island mode — it is one of the oldest formats in the ecosystem, and thousands of published islands are built around it. Promoting the idea to a Battle Royale Match Override moves it from something creators host to something Epic ships in the core playlist rotation.

That matters for creators more than the patch notes suggest. When a format that islands compete on becomes a first-party toggle in Battle Royale, the islands built on it have to differentiate on something other than the premise — custom props, scoring, map design or scale. It is the same pressure that followed Epic's first-party takes on other community formats.

Two Sprites came from players

Two of the three Sprites shipping in v42.10 are winners of the Design-a-Sprite contest Epic ran during Chapter 7 Season 3. Player-designed cosmetics shipping in a numbered patch is a small thing, but it is the visible end of the same pipeline that pays out to island creators — the contest route is one of the few ways a player's own art reaches Battle Royale without going through the Item Shop or a licensing deal.

When it lands

Downtime starts at 4:00 AM PT / 7:00 AM ET on September 3 and is expected to finish about two hours later. Epic has posted a v42.10 known-issues thread on the Epic Developer Community forums ahead of the release, which is usually the first place UEFN creators see breaking changes documented — worth checking before publishing an island update on patch day.
